Recent studies show that high blood pressure can be lowered by the DASH Diet plan and by reduced salt intake (sodium). The DASH eating plan also has other benefits, such as lowering LDL (bad) cholesterol, which, along with lowering blood pressure, can reduce your risk for getting heart disease. Each method alone lowers blood pressure, however, the combination of the eating plan and a decreased sodium intake gives the highest benefit and prevents the development of high blood pressure. The DASH Diet Plan is:1- Low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and total fat. 2- Rich in fruits, vegetables, and fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products. 3- Includes whole grain products, fish, poultry, and nuts. 4- Low in lean red meat, sweets, added sugars, and sugar-containing beverages compared to the typical American diet. 5- Rich in potassium, magnesium, calcium, protein and fiber (nutrients that are expected to lower blood pressure).
Daily Nutrient Goals of the DASH Plan (for a 2,100 Calorie Plan):- Total fat: 27% of calories- Saturated fat: 6% of calories- Protein: 18% of calories- Carbohydrate: 55% of calories- Cholesterol: 150 mg- Sodium: 2,300 mg. the diet offers 2 levels of daily sodium consumption 2,300 and 1,500 milligrams per day. 2,300 milligrams is the highest level acceptable by the National High Blood Pressure Education Program. 1,500 milligram can lower blood pressure further and more recently is more recommended as adequate intake and one that most people should try to achieve. The lower your salt intake is, the lower your blood pressure. Studies have found that the DASH menus containing 2,300 milligrams of sodium can lower blood pressure and that an even lower level of sodium, 1,500 milligrams, can further reduce blood pressure. Current salt consumption in the United States is 4,200 milligrams per day in adult men and 3,300 milligrams per day in adult women. – Potassium: 4,700 mg- Calcium: 1,250 mg- Magnesium: 500 mg- Fiber: 30 g
DASH Diet and Weight LossYou can lose weight while following the DASH diet plan at lower calorie levels with increasing your physical activity. The best way to lose weight is by doing so gradually, getting more physical activity, and eating a balanced diet that is lower in calories and fat. Physical activity can be done at one time for 30 minutes , or at 3 times 10 minutes each for a total of 30 minutes. To avoid weight gain, try to total about 60 minutes per day. How to Lower Calories on the DASH Eating Plan?The DASH eating plan can be adopted to promote weight loss. It is rich in lower-calorie foods, such as fruits and vegetables. You can make it lower in calories by replacing higher calorie foods such as sweets with more fruits and vegetables and that also will make it easier for you to reach your DASH goals. Here are some examples:1- To increase fruits: Eat a medium apple instead of four shortbread cookies. You’ll save 80 calories. Eat 1/4 cup of dried apricots instead of a 2-ounce bag of pork rinds. You’ll save 230 calories. 2- To increase vegetables: Have a hamburger that’s 3 ounces of meat instead of 6 ounces. Add a 1/2-cup serving of carrots and a 1/2-cup serving of spinach. You’ll save more than 200 calories. Instead of 5 ounces of chicken, have a stir fry with 2 ounces of chicken and 11/2 cups of raw vegetables. Use a small amount of vegetable oil. You’ll save 50 calories. 3- To increase fat-free or low-fat milk products: Have a 1/2-cup serving of low-fat frozen yogurt instead of a 1/2-cup serving of full-fat ice cream. You’ll save about 70 calories. 4- Other calorie-saving tips: – Use fat-free or low-fat condiments. Use half as much vegetable oil, soft or liquid margarine, mayonnaise, or salad dressing, or choose available low-fat or fat-free versions. Eat smaller portions and cut back gradually. Choose fat-free or low-fat milk and milk products. Check the food labels to compare fat content in packaged foods and items marked fat-free or low-fat are not always lower in calories than their regular versions. Limit foods with lots of added sugar,such as pies, flavored yogurts, candy bars, ice cream, sherbet, regular soft drinks, and fruit drinks. – Eat fruits canned in their own juice or in water. Add fruit to plain fat-free or low-fat yogurt. Snack on fruit, vegetable sticks, unbuttered and unsalted popcorn, or rice cakes. Drink water or club soda and zest it up with a wedge of lemon or lime.

You probably have heard of the cookie diet and you probably wondered to yourself how on earth it works.
I was in the same boat as you and I’ll admit I was even a little skeptical at first myself. I said to myself, “what is the cookie diet?!. . . . That sounds like a nice dream. . ” Well, I was wrong. It is very much a reality and I will explain how.
It’s not the cookies that make you lose weight per se. You see the cookies, I found out, are made up of specific ingredients that include certain types of amino acids. These acids are food proteins that actually suppress your hunger. This is the key to losing weight.
Normally, a diet doesn’t work because you need to consume LESS calories every week in order to lose weight. When you eat a low calorie diet, it is very hard to deal with severe hunger pains so we succumb to our hunger and over eat.
Most foods that suppress our hunger successfully are fatty foods that are high in calories. That’s where the cookie comes in. This particular cookie successfully suppresses your hunger while also remaining a low calorie food. BOOM. How come nobody came out with a natural hunger suppressing food before?!
I did the research and it doesn’t appear that anybody has which is very surprising to me. Of course, the amino acids don’t have to be put into a cookie in order to work. You could put them in soup, shakes or anything really. But, a cookie is the most convenient, durable and easy to carry snack.
What the Doctor who invented the cookie diet plan did was create a food that is LOW in calories, but also suppresses your hunger naturally using amino acids and food proteins. He is one of the only people to ever develop a low calorie food that is a natural hunger suppressant. Why more people haven’t done it, I have no idea. It’s simple, logical and scientific.
Basically, you eat 7 cookies a day which is about 500 calories and then a nutritious dinner consisting of lean meat and a green vegetable which is about 300. This gives you an 800 calorie/day diet and would normally be near impossible if it weren’t for the hunger suppressing agents in the cookie. I would recommend the cookie diet plan to anyone who is looking to lose weight the healthy way.
It could go in your purse, pocket, briefcase, car, etc. Plus, who doesn’t love cookies? Also with the cookie diet, you are supposed to eat lean meat, chicken or fish and 1 cup of green vegetables for dinner every night. So, it’s not just eating cookies all day!

For anyone who is not sure, a fad diet is one that promises quick weight loss and is usually popular for a short amount of time. So, that brings on the question, ‘Should you use a fad diet for the purpose of losing weight’?
Fad diets are tempting to choose because they claim to offer a quick weight loss solution. We live in an ‘instant’ world where we want everything as fast as possible. However, we tend to forget that the weight gain was not instant. Would you be able to resist an offer that claims to melt away all your fat within just a few weeks? I know you cannot! People often fall for such offers only to realize that they have been scammed.
What will usually happen with fad diets is that you will lose a few pounds very quickly but, and this is a big BUT, you will gain back all those ‘lost pounds’ shortly! That’s one of the things that they don’t tell you. There are other side affects that you could suffer from by choosing fad diets! Prolonged use of fad diets may even cause untimely death!
Here are three reasons why fad diets fail:
1. Fad diets don’t necessarily change your bad eating habits:
Weight loss is only possible when you follow a healthy diet and also change your overall lifestyle habits. Instead of sitting in front of the TV for hours, you need to get up and move around. Instead of eating chocolate as if it’s going out of fashion you need to eat healthy, nutritional foods with as much variety as possible.
Bad eating habits are what made you put on extra weight in the first place so fad diets aren’t going to change those bad habits. That’s why any results you see are only going to be short-lived!
2. Fad diets are unnatural diets:
Most fad diets suggest that you follow unnatural meal plans. They tend to ask you to survive only one fruit juice and cabbages, or to drastically reduce your food intake, or starve for long periods of time – also known as crash dieting.
Some of them require you to survive on only one type of food such as protein-rich foods. By doing this you create an imbalance in your body’s nutrient equilibrium, with one nutrient being in excess and the other in deficit! As your body cannot sustain with a type of diet such as this for too long. This is the reason why you have to quit fad diets at some point of time or other, the sooner the better!
3. Fad diets can result in severe health complications:
Fad diets affect your health severely especially if you use them for a prolonged period of time. Depression, headaches, digestion problems such as constipation, impotence, dehydration, etc. , are some of the maladies that may result from the use of fad diets. In extreme cases of prolonged use of fad diets, premature death may occur. However, many people quit their diet programs much before death could happen!
So, in answer to the question ‘Should you use a fad diet for the purpose of losing weight’? I’ll let you be the judge of that!
